The Beagle by Rae Iolene

The Beagle 

He started as Wilbur. 

Wilbur, the Beagle, to be precise. 

But, in reality he was named 

after Charlotte’s Web.

And so he became Will, 

and we started occasionally 

calling him “pig” due to his

nature to grunt in displeasure—  

or when he wanted something,  

preferably peanut butter. 

So then, Wilbur became Willy. 

And Willy became Butter Bean.

He still chases leaves and

carries sticks, but most of 

all, he is our little buddy, our 

Willy Wonka, our blonde 

Butter Ball—a true joy in life

when times are stressed.
